2025-DIGITAL SAT OR NEW FORMAT ACT?

Writer's picture: Karen HartleyKaren Hartley

Now that SAT has transitioned to the new digital format, what now? Reading/Writing and Math in Module 2 are very difficult compared to the College Board practice tests. Many students are questioning whether they should switch to ACT. ACT currently is 1 hour longer and students have 25% less time on ACT than SAT. On ACT, you must move extremely fast on all sections. SAT questions are not as straightforward as ACT questions. SAT questions are puzzles. They're testing can a student think their way through a puzzle that they've never seen before. SAT Math is not like school Math. It's puzzle Math and you use school Math as your tool for solving the puzzles. ACT Math is more difficult Math, having more Pre-Calc and various Math topics that you don't see on SAT but it is more straightforward like school math than SAT. ACT rewards the monster Readers with some Math skill because they're the only ones that can get through English, Reading and Science fast enough. SAT rewards the Math people who have some reading skill. Math people like puzzles.

Now ACT, in order to compete with SAT for market share of students, is moving to a new digital format launching in April 2025. New digital format ACT will be 1 hour shorter for a 2 hour 15 minute test. Science section will be optional (to the relief of many students). There will be fewer questions in both the English and Math sections so there will be more time per questions in both sections. There will be 4 answer choices for each question instead of 5 choices on the current ACT. The paper test will change to the new format in September 2025. Many students that don't like the puzzle aspect of SAT might consider ACT as an option in the new digital format after April. It will be interesting to see what ACT will look like when they make the practice test available on ACT.org. Stay tuned!!

It should be a very interesting year.
